Beware Internet work-at-home scam

'Freebie trading,' an online marketing technique, has grown as an industry with disciples who say they make money, but critics say it's nothing but a rip-off.
[Related content: savings, consumer guide, income, free, fraud]
By Doug Dowson, The Big Money

Emily B.'s video testimonial is the first thing you see when you log on to ProjectPayday.com. "I am so excited that I found Project Payday," she tells the camera. "Finally I can make my ends meet. Finally I've got the money that I need. And it's all thanks to me finding this program."

* Are you over your head in debt?

Emily B. is just one of many Americans who have discovered Project Payday, an online moneymaking scheme based on something called "freebie trading." Although Emily B. doesn't mention it in her two-minute video, freebie trading involves using online forums, personal Web sites, YouTube videos and other marketing techniques to drive traffic to special Web sites that advertise various products and trial offers -- all in exchange for a fee.
What distinguishes freebie trading from traditional forms of affiliate marketing is that it is based on a trading model in which individuals agree to buy products from these special Web sites on one another's behalf in exchange for a cut of the resulting commission.

In the last few years, freebie trading has grown into a multimillion-dollar industry in which work-at-home professionals generate incomes of as much as $5,000 a month. As conditions continue to lag in the U.S. labor market, more and more people are turning to this controversial work-at-home business as a source of extra income. But behind the video testimonials and success stories lies an industry plagued by fraud that many insiders believe may be on the verge of collapse.
Gina Giangrasso of Poughkeepsie, N.Y., learned about freebie trading in February 2008. As a stay-at-home mom without the means to pay for day care, Giangrasso was looking for a way to make some extra money working from home. She hadn't had much luck with other work-at-home opportunities. "There are a lot of scams out there, envelope stuffing, rebates . . . and you make nothing."

Then Giangrasso found Project Payday. She was skeptical at first but liked the low cost of starting the program, a mere $4.95. "For five bucks, I figured why not?"

Since then, Giangrasso has completed more than 1,000 freebie trades and is now one of the top traders in the industry. Giangrasso has made an average of about $2,000 per month trading freebies. She made more than $5,000 in December 2008.

"There is so much money to be made, it's ridiculous," Giangrasso says.
'Incentivized freebie Web site'
So how does she do it?

It all starts with something called an IFW or "incentivized freebie Web site." IFWs are special Web sites that advertise hundreds of different products and trial offers and offer cash and prizes -- like Xbox 360s, plasma TVs and iPhones -- to people who sign up for their offers and get a few other people to do the same. These offers come from well-known companies such as Netflix, Blockbuster and The New York Times, as well as less-reputable companies, like payday lenders and online psychic services.

"Essentially, advertisers pay us and we have the money to actually buy you guys gifts for free," explained IFW owner Gabriel Hunter in an April interview with BlogTalkRadio.

Back in 2004, when IFWs like FreeiPods.com first became popular, it was all about the prizes -- especially iPods. But in the last couple of years, a new class of freebie entrepreneur has emerged -- people like Giangrasso who are less interested in prizes and more interested in making money.

While IFWs aren't allowed to pay you directly to try the products that they advertise, they can pay you to refer customers to them -- sort of like a finder's fee -- which you can then share with your referrals. That way everybody wins. These referral commissions can range anywhere from $40 to $120 per customer. That's how people like Giangrasso make upward of $5,000 a month.

There's an entire online community of freebie traders who do this on a regular basis. How many? It could be as many as 250,000.
A 'freebie savant'
Ken Sarner, from Hanover Township, Pa., is another freebie-trading success story. In February 2008, Sarner stumbled on Project Payday and began trading freebies part time. Six months later, he decided he wanted to quit his job as a Volvo salesman and become a full-time freebie trader.

Sarner's wife wasn't on board at first. "She wasn't thrilled," he says.

So they made a deal. "She told me, if you can make $10,000 by the end of the year trading freebies, you can do it full time. Otherwise you have to go back to selling cars." They made this agreement on Aug. 22, 2008. By the end of the year, Sarner had made $13,000, the equivalent of a $36,000 annual salary.

Today, Sarner, a self-described "freebie savant," estimates that he makes between $3,000 and $3,500 a month as a freebie trader. Sarner cautions, however, that his experience is not typical. "There aren't more than a couple people making as much money as I am," he says.

Not everyone who tries freebie trading is as satisfied as Giangrasso or Sarner. Some complain about having to give out too much personal information. Others have trouble completing trades and getting paid. Those who manage to get "credited" for their trades often find the process tedious and time-consuming. And if you sign up for a few trial offers and forget to cancel the ones you don't want, you could get stuck with painful charges on your credit card.

Users who get burned in the freebie-trading industry frequently air their grievances on Web sites and online message boards. RipOffReport.com, a consumer advocacy Web site, has received seven reports from users complaining about Project Payday. Scam.com has received eight.

None of the work-at-home experts I spoke with had heard of Project Payday or were familiar with freebie trading. They nonetheless labeled the business a scam. "It's just another get-rich-quick scheme," said Christine Durst, founder and CEO of Staffcentrix, a training company for home-based workers. "It reeks of pyramid and MLM," she said, referring to pyramid and multilevel marketing schemes.

"It's a scam," says Kate Lister, author of "Undress for Success: The Naked Truth About Making Money at Home," published in March 2009. "This one doesn't have all of the telltale signs (of a work-at-home scam), but it has most of them," she said, including upfront costs and a lack of accountability among the major companies in the industry -- like not providing a company address or phone number. "If it did work, everybody would be doing it," Lister added.

How the Google Page Creator shutdown may affect your blog

By Wiktor Gworek, Software Engineer (Krakow, Poland)

A while back, Google announced that they were shutting down Google Page Creator and offered users the option to upgrade to Google Sites. In the past, some custom template designers used Page Creator to host javascript, a file type that Google Sites does not support. Since a number of bloggers use templates that rely on files hosted on Page Creator, we realized that links to those files would break once the migration from Page Creator to Sites was complete.

Fret not! Rather than see our users' templates break, we built a tool to preserve these links and host the affected files. To find out if your blog is affected, login to your Blogger Dashboard. If we've detected that your blog template contains links to Google Page Creator, you will see the following warning:

If you see this warning, click Update and review to access the Blogger Template Fixer and correct the links on your blog. (Note: you may not notice any problems with your blog until Page Creator shuts down over the coming days). Visit our Help Center to learn more about fixing your template.

Also, if you have issues fixing your template, let us know at the Blogger Help Group.

What's the world's fastest browser?

Oh sure, the following tests aren't as scientific as putting all the browsers in a ring and seeing which one is left standing after the fight, but it's close.

Before we begin however, the new contender: Swiftfox.

Firefox, which we all know and love, has in recent times been accused of putting on weight and slipping back the bulky days of Mozilla, the very thing its birth was supposed to be an escape from. The draw cards of Firefox's first releases were speed and simplicity.

While I personally don't think Firefox has strayed far from this, there are those who feel otherwise -- like the chaps behind Swiftfox.

Swiftfox is Firefox with a few key differences -- it's compiled with optimised flags for various CPU architectures, and it drops some of the more recent bulk -- such as the depedencies on the Pango libraries (used in part for international font rendering).

It's only available for Linux, but as Firefox is open source, there's nothing stopping someone building a Swiftfox for Windows.

Swiftfox has gained a rapid following for being noticeably faster, so I was curious to see if this was the case. Armed with my Ubuntu install, and specialised 'benchmarking toolkit' (read: bag of chips, coke, and a stopwatch), I sat down to see if Swiftfox could live up to its moniker using the AMD64 optimised binary for Ubuntu on my AMD64 4400+ system.

If you want seriously hardcore Web standards benchmarking, throw your browser through the Acid2 test, which is really what it's all about. But here, we're looking for speed, and for this there's nothing better than Scragz' quick and dirty browser rendering benchmark. So, onto the results!
First, a baseline under Windows:

(32-bit) Internet Explorer 6: 3.76 seconds
(32-bit) 1.5.0.6 Firefox: 5.03
(32-bit) 9.01 Opera: 4.89

Well there's a nice surprise! Even the aging IE6 bundled with Windows XP is a fair bit faster at the testpage than Firefox and Opera. But lets see how things fare under 64-bit Ubuntu and if Swiftfox lives up to its name:

(64-bit) 1.5.0.6 Firefox: 4.75 seconds
(32-bit) 1.5.0.6 Firefox: 4.79
(32-bit) 1.5.0.6 Swiftfox: 4.67

Well, Swiftfox is indeed faster -- by about 1.7%. Not really that much to write home about, but your mileage may vary. And plausibly, the 64-bit version of Firefox is flea's sneeze faster than the 32-bit version. While we're here, what about the two default browsers for the KDE and Gnome desktops, common to most Linux distributions:

(64-bit) 3.5.2 Konqueror: 3.75 seconds
(64-bit) 2.4.1.1 Epiphany: 4.69

Now there's another surprise. Not only is the default (and often overlooked) Gnome browser Epiphany rendering almost as fast as Swiftfox, but Konqueror (KDE's default browser) blows them all away, running head to head with IE on Windows.

So there you go. You want speed, it's Konqueror or, yes, IE. And, to be fair, while Swiftfox wasn't exactly leaps ahead it does actually startup noticeably faster than Firefox, which is nice.

Do you notice rendering speed differences between browsers? And which is your preferred choice and why?

Top 10 Reasons to Have an Ezine

  1. Establish yourself as a trusted expert. People search online for information and will look to you, as a subject matter expert, to provide it to them. Every week (or whatever schedule works) provides an opportunity to build on this, while reinforcing your brand.

  2. Build a relationship with the people on your list. It's common knowledge that people like to buy from people they like. By using ezines to connect with readers in their homes, you can develop a relationship of familiarity and trust. Be sure to share a little about yourself or your company in every issue, whether it is an anecdote, event, or employee spotlight.

  3. Keep in touch with prospects and clients. Consideration should be given to eventually developing two ezines: one for prospects and one for clients, as each require different information. This is a great way to notify your readers of weekly specials or upcoming product launches, offer new articles or customer stories, and provide links (or urls) to updated FAQs, blogs and splash pages.

  4. Drive traffic to your website or blog. As noted in #3, remember to call attention to new blog posts or other changes to your website with links directly to those pages. Remind readers of your online newsletter archives. Promote special sales (maybe with discount coupon codes only for subscribers) with a link to the sales page. Use links to turn your ezines and newsletters into "silent salespersons"– driving traffic to your website and building your lists around the clock.

  5. Build content on your website. Make a habit to adding your ezines and newsletters to your website in an archive area. This serves a several important purposes:

    • Visitors can read an issue or two to determine if your ezine will be of interest to them, which could help to increase sign-ups and potential sales.

    • If you optimize your article placements, you will not only make your website "meatier", but you'll also bring new traffic from the search engines.

  6. Get feedback from your readers. Make it easy for you to stay in touch with prospects and customers and vice versa. Ask them to take action and comment on your articles and offers. Conduct polls and surveys. Start a "Letters to the Editor" column in your ezine. Feedback allows you to fine tune your messages, target your marketing, and expand your product line. It's also great for relationship building!

  7. Develop an information product. If you deliver your newsletter once a week and include two articles, at the end of a year you'll have 104 well-researched articles in your portfolio! Pick the best-of-the-best and turn them into a bonus ebook for opting-in to your list, submit to download sites to build your list, or sell in PDF-format!

  8. Grow your mailing list. Let your ezine subscribers work for you. Be sure to remind your readers that it's okay to forward your newsletter to anyone they'd like. In addition, it's important to include sign-up instructions for those who received your ezine from viral marketing methods. A simple line titled, "Get Your Own Copy of XXXXXX", with a link to your squeeze or opt-in page is all it takes!

  9. Gather demographic data. By offering surveys, feedback forms, and niche reports, you'll be able to get valuable information about your prospects and customers. Learn what makes your readers tick, how to better serve them, and how to give them what they want. Make sure they become repeat customers!

  10. Save money! All of the above benefits of publishing an ezine are free or almost free. The small cost of a top-rated ezine publishing system is nothing compared to the cost of brochures, business cards, advertising, direct mail, pay-per-click or other means of promotion. Not only that, but someone has to manage that production! Because your newsletter is delivered online, you can grow your list to be as large as you want without worrying about the expense. Bottom line − it's proven that email marketing is the most cost-effective marketing solution for companies just like yours!
